I had the incredible honor of participating in the Make Mama Proud cooking show (airing on YouTube this Spring 2026) — a space that celebrates moms and grandmas, heritage, and the powerful stories told through food. More details to come!

This dish is inspired by my Navajo heritage and my late grandmother, “J,” who was raised on the Reservation in Ramah, New Mexico. Her life began in the early 1900s, and she lived through seasons that required strength, faith, and resourcefulness. She knew what it meant to live off the land — tending livestock, growing corn, storing food for winter, and making sure her children were cared for no matter what.

Each ingredient in Living Full Squash represents a part of her story. The squash reminds me of the fields and the importance of planting and harvesting with intention. The seasoning reflects the blending of cultures and traditions that shaped our family. The warmth of the dish speaks to the warmth of her kitchen — a place where faith was lived out quietly and consistently.

Grandma J was a true homemaker. She loved God deeply. She loved others generously. She blessed her family daily with her cooking — not elaborate meals, but faithful ones. Meals that nourished body and spirit. Meals that said, You are cared for. You are provided for.

Preparing this recipe on Make Mama Proud felt like carrying her legacy forward. It was my way of saying thank you. Of honoring a beautiful life well lived. Of reminding others that our stories matter — especially the ones rooted in home, family, and faith.

Food is never just food. It is memory. It is culture. It is love made visible.

And this dish will always make Mama proud.
